Highs in the 80s? Thunderstorms in the forecast? Fine — but we’re still going to Shenandoah.

In a lot of ways, the weekend weather was perfect for autumnal excursions. We might not have been able to break out that new plaid scarf we’ve been dying to wear, but winter is coming so enjoy the warmth while it lasts.

My leaf peeping posse started at a wine tasting in (little) Washington, Va. The air was warm and the breeze was mild — it felt like summer’s last days. The drive through Shenandoah National Park was beautiful, albeit crowded. By my best judgement, the highest trees along Skyline were at peak — maybe just one or two days away — on Sunday, but the lower elevations (which you see from the scenic overlooks) are still maybe a week away. Next weekend will probably be the best for these views.

We’re even seeing oranges and reds closer to the city. The trees in D.C. that always turn first (like the one in Lafayette Square) have primed the city for autumn. Fall color is creeping into the Beltway.

Thanks to everyone who shared their fall colors with us!
